Flat Earth

Analyze, find patterns, deny them and then imagine.

The goal of Flat Earth is to reverse an evidence of your field of investigation in order to come up with a brand new idea. Collect a set of digital traces, find a pattern or a common behaviour, state an assumption based on it and then deny the assumption. Due to this denial you will turn the tide and stimulate the conversation inside the working group. Thanks to Digital Methods these evidence can be extracted from social networks and you can use the metadata in your dataset to guide your operations. Flat Earth will allow the working group to let go of the framework-preconceptions and formulate new ideas that can be transferred back into the real world.

PREPARATION

01

Design your query in order to find the best set of words that represents your investigation.

Identify the type of content you want to use between images and hashtags.

Identify the platform from which you want to gather the data and use the Tools to build your set of digital traces. Be sure to have some metadata.

Order your dataset according to the metadata that you believe is more important and downsize it up to 100 images/hashtags.

Design and print the cards for your co-designing session. On the back side of each card put the metadata that is interesting for the research.

IDEATION SESSION

Analyze the cards during the co-design session: find a common behaviour or a pattern between the majority of the cards.
If you are stuck remember to take into account also the metadata related to each card.

Formulate a statement that describes the common behaviour/pattern.

Deny the statement you just create in point 7.

Generate new ideas based on that statement. Don't worry if the ideas seem to be absurd!

Focus on one idea and generate between 3 and 5 statements that describe the main characteristic of that group. Than use these statements as a starting point to bring further the conversation inside the working team.

Try to transfer the best ideas back into the real world (field of investigation).
